I believe the only way to get the free Windows 10 is a download install and it will need to see the registration for the Windows 7 installation. I would install the copy of Windows 7 (if it's not already) and then let the updater install Windows 10. The good thing is if Windows 10 turns out to be an issue you can go back to Windows 7. If it's a play machine anyway, what harm is there? You can always just wipe it and reinstall from the disc again.
