To get the free Win-10 upgrade he would have to show the Windows 7 license, but I think this could be done with the Windows 7 installation disk in the optical drive without actually installing it.

Doing this however would still tie that Win7 key to that computer where it could still be run as a virtual machine with Win-10 as the host.
