I quickly looked at FreeNAS as well and might build a NAS box as well after playing with ubuntu for a bit. I've got a smaller dual core desktop throw away that I can use for it. I think it has 6 SATA ports on the motherboard. I also have a 4 port SATA RAID card I can use which does support RAID 5.
