I was there in 96 and change was occurring wherever you looked, in the big cities at least....the guides we had (and a guide was required by the govmint) told us quite candidly what they did in the past and how they got their present jobs.... Our favorite guide taught Russian during the good days with the Russkies, but after the falling out when China and the US got friendly, she taught English.... She told us about how they use to make fun of Mao's Little Red Book.... I emphasize, we were not allowed to stray from the beaten path..... We went to visit an internal city and the wife of a couple we met got sick in a department store so he wanted to take her back to our ship in a taxi........ He was not told directly no, but they said they had a cab coming for them and in the meantime took us to the store managers conference room where they entertained us for about an hour (including singing to us) until the approved cab arrived.... We found the people to be lovely and friendly an even sent one of the store clerks a Xmas card so she could get the stamp..... But building cranes and new highways (sparsely used) were all over the place.... Public sanitation places were poor....our women had very full bladders by the time we got back to the ship each day. So I don't think you got a very good picture of what it is really like. Get off your ass and travel, you're almost out of runway...
