The second half of 1997 has seen the emergence of a cluster of competing Digital Video Disc ( DVD ) prototypes. Companies in the DVD industry, such as Pacific Mirror Image, believe that DVDs will soon replace existing technologies such as CD players, CD-ROMs, VHS players, and even ultimately the video recorder. However, it is difficult for business customers to determine where hyperbole ends and genuine utility begins, particularly in relation to the bottom line. In this context there is every risk that a customer may end up with the 1990s equivalent of a Betamax player
