Well, I don't venerate the Declaration so it doesn't get my dander up. But I do like the part about "the merciless Indian savages", because the crowd that loves the idea of all men being created equal aren't too happy with Jefferson's failure to appreciate the multi-cultural aspects of native American culture.

Maier must be writing about Harry Jaffa and his followers, who seem to want to make a religion out of the Declaration; one Civil War from this crowd was enough. Personally I think there is merit to Stan Evan's theory of the origins of the Declaration: there is a Huguenot document about 100 years older that is very similar to the Declaration, and Jefferson may have had a copy in his library.
