Islam is violent, not for everyone and not all the time. But the potential for religiously sanctioned violence is always there -

it's in the religion because the founder (who is supposed to be the ideal man) was a violent man who justified a wide variety of crimes as divine favor.
Christianity was purportedly founded by a man who promoted peace and love, and yet, so much violence has been done in the name of Christianity over the millennium its crazy:

Mass murder, beheadings, highway robbery, enslavement, rape, torture, terrorism .... you name it, Mohammed did it and a good Muslim has to consider all Mohammed's actions as divinely sanctioned and virtuous. To copy him is a virtue in the religion.
