An NT reminiscence ...

<< NT-4 was the first Windows based OS I used regularly at work and I liked it better than Win95 and 98. >>

Prior to XP, Windows 2000 (as a beta tester only) was the only NT based OS I had experience with but I do have one very fond memory of NT 5 -- as well as some excrutiating ones due to it's delays and estimated release date pushbacks which affected some of my very big name clients building security software to run on it. I posted the long paragraph below somewhere on SI in response to a post about assembly coders and 'usability' testing but couldn't find it using 'Advanced Search' ...

>> "There's a very special place in my heart for assembly coders, but I do agree that (at least on the whole) they aren't necessarily the best testers for usability. The most fun I ever had at a trade show was working 4 days in the Microsoft booth as a Microsoft Partner, rather than in my own larger booth, at a large internarional trade show in Orange County Convention Center (Orlando FL). The NT 5 Beta had just gone gold and Microsoft's booth was totally dedicated to (long overdue) NT 5 and IE. We had several certified drivers for PKI cryptographic APIs (CAPIs) in the CD release that worked with our IC card readers and tokens that were being demonstrated on each NT system on display. While there were a few young marketing types on hand, Microsoft staffing for demos was primarily NT 5 Driver Certification team members, guys that had coded in assembly themselves for pioneering companies from PCs early age. Old fartes like me or even older. Originally I was assigned to the Microsoft booth for 1 day. At my request I stayed for all 4. I'd dine and catch a few brews early each evening with my own mates from around the globe, then catch up with the Microsoft team to hoist a few more pints and swap war stories. We closed our favorite pub each evening before walking back to our respective hotels on International Drive." <<
