I suggest Piers Anthony's series on "XANTH". ( a trilogy that got out of hand that is now about 15 books) Not much tech stuff but the Fantasy is fun reading. All my young readers like it and there isn't anything offensive in the books.(I sell used books BTW) No one's ever returned any and some have come back for more if I had them. For the technophile junkies his 5 book series "Bio of a Space Tyrant" and then the 5 or 6 book Cluster series is also very good. These two series would be good if they liked the Hitchikers Guide.
