Comeon Richard, The DOW are the 30 big high-cap companies... the OEX are the 100 high-caps and include the DOW. Why don't you think an index extracted from options on something like that could be indicative of general market health? Also, since the VIX is calculated from near-the-money OEX options, these options are heavily traded and do not suffer from abberations faced by thinly traded options.
