"A new study conducted at Harvard University shows that in America,
Liberals have a significantly lower IQ than Conservatives. The study was
conducted on 100,000 registered voters in 40 different states over the
last twelve years, and has concluded its results.
The first part of the study lists the correlation between political
beliefs and intelligence. Subjects of the study were chosen at random
and requested to come to an unmarked van to take a test and answer some
questions for a reasonable amount of money.
Of the 100,000 people, there were people from many doctrines, from
conservative to liberal to marxist to fascist. Socialists came out on
bottom, with an average IQ of 87. The second worst were Liberals and
then Marxists, with 88 and 89 respectively. Conservatives received an
average score of 110, which is significantly above average. "

Conclusion
The myth of the higher IQ liberal is premised on a false assumption that political philosophies remain unchanged throughout a person's life. The study conducted to draw the correlation between IQ and political philosophy is flawed in several other ways as well. First, the IQ test conducted only measures one type of intelligence and is not the most complete or accurate test to arrive at a general IQ score. Secondly, the definition of liberal and conservative as used in this study is very narrow and incomplete. Thirdly, the study was conducted on adolescents and young adults who may have ulterior reasons for calling themselves liberal or conservative that have nothing to do with their actual political opinions on various issues.
An examination of several peer reviewed "scientific articles" suggesting that brain structure is different between liberals and conservatives also fails to allow for the fact that people often change their political views throughout their lives. Brain structure should be an unchangeable genetic constant based on inheritance. I am no doctor but I am familiar with the concept of neuroplasticity and the ability of the brain to create new neural networks, however I have not heard of actual parts of the brain changing size. Any experts in this field can correct me if I am wrong. If there was a true correlation between such a constant as size of areas of the brain and a person's political views, then political views could never be changed. But political views are variables that do change throughout many people's lives. These factors render the theory of the higher IQ liberal unfounded. |
