I read something that said the whole African trophy industry is govt controlled, the guides chosen from a govt list, the animal to be taken specifically identified before the hunter enters the country. I suspect the intention was to make money off a lion that was getting old. Why let a lion get too old and die on its own when some rich guy will pay big bucks to get a trophy. Old male lions are run off by a younger male, live alone till they get starved enough (females make most kills and lions hunt as a pride) for a pack of hyenas to tear him up. There aren't many pleasant humane deaths for animals in the wild. I think the "hunter" knew the whole thing was a setup fake hunt and so did the govt authorities.
