Back when he was quoted, and it was a little more nuanced, the Scandinavian poverty rate was only half the average for poverty in America, I recall something like 6-7%. Oh here, I found it:

Truly, how to lie with statistics out of context. US white privilege and its tragic legacy from America's slave and racist past was stronger in those years- something you probably don't acknowledge. Things are better now, the majority of Americans are less racist, and more just, but we still have a long way to go with our treatment of minorities. They too have some responsibility to climb the ladder whenever its available. We all have to help each other, or we will certainly perish as a civilization.
