Here's reality:

West was so extreme and uncivil he divided his own Tea Party base.

Abrasive and hyperbolic, he once said the core of Democrats in Congress were secretly members of the Communist Party. I'm sure that worked in the Michael Savage Weiner fringe, but not for the majority of conservative voters.

Still, he raised the second most money to Boehner, $17M - mostly from out-of-state according to reports.

He actually changed districts to a more Republican friendly one. West's refusal to shake hands with his Republican primary challenger made a bad impression on the district. That opponent, Sheriff Crowder, later endorsed Democrat Murphy.

In the district’s Republican stronghold, Martin County, West received 4,800 fewer votes than Mitt Romney., Murphy outperformed Obama by 3,700 votes. Actually REPUBLICANS split their ticket.

...west's old district was redistricted and the new one had voted 57% for obama so it wasn't conservative, so Allen ran in a different district, which is hard to do
