That isn't what I've seen. There are certainly many who are properly in that category. When my son was in the military it wasn't because he was poor. It was because it was what he wanted to do. A physician friend who recently died had two sons who served after 9/11. And in fact there are many families where young adults have made that decision.

Who knows why but they do it. It is good experience for anyone, and many of these "poor, lower and middle class kids" are able to make something of themselves after they're done when they'd otherwise never have been able to do so.

There are many people for whom an honorable discharge is all they have and some businesses do prefer military people because they know they can accomplish certain tasks. Some of them learn serious leadership skills.

As an example take Toney Armstrong who has been in the news the last few days. He is the Director of the Memphis police and a fine man who has served his community for many years now. Previously, he was a Lt. in the homicide division and proved his excellence there. Armstrong enlisted in the military in 83, served his hitch, came out without great accolades and became a true community leader (a kind of leadership our president could not accomplish). Today he is about as good a role model as you can find in this country.

Don't discount the military as an opportunity.
