Steve, AMAT does have more than a billion in cash (James Morgan learned a lesson in 1977 when the company was in the brink of bankruptcy with no cash) to use in downturns. We will be seeing acquisitions at bargain prices (OPAL/ORBOT comes to mind) to enter new markets and gain market share...In bad times, we don't see AMAT losing money, it comes out stronger than its competitors when things turn up...Perhaps we as investors could take a cue from AMAT---raise cash in good times and acquire depreciated assets (stocks) in bad times...
