Explorers In Need of Cash Are Selling Oil Fields as Last Resort - (EXCO Resources Inc. (XCO))
There’s more to come -- by one estimate, another $20 billion this year -- as executives at Occidental Petroleum Corp., Whiting Petroleum Corp., Penn Virginia Corp., Exco Resources Inc., Chesapeake Energy Corp. and Ultra Petroleum Corp. have all said in recent weeks that they are selling assets or exploring sales.
The surge shows how the industry’s two-pronged strategy for staying financially healthy since oil prices started tanking -- raising capital while tightening belts -- may not be enough, particularly for companies with a lot of outstanding debt. Bank regulators are getting nervous about the industry’s exposure to drillers, creating another incentive to sell assets.
----------------------------------------

FWIW, EXCO Resources postponed it's annual meeting today until Friday after the close tomorrow. (the dreaded Friday after the close before the weekend). The vote was to approve a reverse split. Chatter is that a pre-packaged reorganization may be in the works providing for (1) the company to go private (Wilbur Ross Group) and/or (2) pre-packaged BK where some assets are sold and senior debt holders receive some new common/preferred 'equity' interest.

It will be interesting to see how the recapitalization is done as it may be how some of the other asset rich but heavy debt burdened E&P's play their final 'Exit' card.

FWIW, I have a small position of the XCO unsecured Bonds that I bought Monday for such an 'end' event.
