If Audacity gives you this error message, make change below.

Stereo Mix needs to be enabled for Audacity to record speaker sound.

Right-Click speaker icon at lower right

Select "Recording Devices"

Go to the "Recording" Tab

Look for Stereo Mix

If you don't see it, Right-Click in Recording Tab window.

Make sure "Show Recording Devices" is checked

Look for Stereo Mix Again and Right-Click on it

Click "Enable" on pop-up window

Make sure Stereo Mix has a check-mark by it showing it is the selected device.

Click "OK"

Start Audacity AFTER Stereo Mix is enabled.

Procedure for Windows 7 -- Haven't checked other versions, but should be similar.
