I agree with the first part and disagree with the second.

McCain-Feingold was killed by the red, not the blue. McCain is a warmonger, but has been decent on many domestic issues, taking on the extremes in his party. That's why they called him a Maverick, until the RNC got hold of him and commanded his rebranding in the 2008 election. His VP decision for Palin was to appease the emerging Tea Party wing. He stopped being himself and the rest was, as they say, history.
