Bentway,
ISIS's goal is not to attack 'the Great Satan', or even 'the little Satan' (Israel). It's to found a new Islamic Caliphate. They aren't AQ. Their main threat is to other Islamic states in the region - let them fight for their lives. It just doesn't have to be our fight.
I would agree, but there doesn't seem to be any limit to ISIS' long-term goals.

How big do they want this "caliphate"? Should we just wait until they're too big to ignore?

There are no easy answers to that question, of course. Like I said, the dream scenario is for ISIS to just collapse upon itself.

But the use of chemical weapons in that (and related) conflicts complicates things further.

And let's not forget that as ISIS grows in power, their ability to influence "lone wolves" becomes greater and greater. We're going to see more attacks like the Boston marathon bombing or Charlie Hebdo. What's next? Nerve gas in Grand Central station?

Those are the risks of "doing nothing," and they have to be weighed against the dangers of "doing something."
