Calling a whiteman a chimp does not have obvious racist overtones.

Bush laughed like a chimp.

This not-so-complicated principle would also apply to anti-Semitic smears from left or right, many dating back centuries - - dog-whistles against Barbara Boxer, Al Franken or Joe Lieberman -- the same adjectives, nouns and phrases would be mere hyperbolic rhetoric against a non-Jew.

Bush as chimp, not racist.

Obama as chimp, racist.

Historic context. Easy to understand.
