Civil rights for African and Asian Americans had to deal with the same religious rights arguments. At the extremes, the vigilante Klanitself saw/sees itself fundamentally as a Christian organization. The majority of Americans don't like the Christian version of Sharia law, and are ever more comfortable with LBGTQ as full adult citizens. Gender is not always binary and mature adults now understand this.
