2-Year-Old Alabama Boy May Have Accidentally Shot, Killed Father: Cops by Erik Ortiz

A 31-year-old man was fatally shot Tuesday in his Alabama apartment on Tuesday — and police say his toddler may have pulled the trigger.

The father — identified Wednesday as Divine Vaniah Chambliss — suffered a gunshot wound to the head, Hoover police said in a statement. No one else was believed to be home at the time, and there was no indication of an intruder.

"However, this investigation is still in its very early stages and detectives are not completely ruling out other possibilities," police said.

The 2-year-old child's mother had returned to the home at The Cliffs at Rocky Ridge Apartments and found Chambliss' body before calling 911, NBC affiliate WVTM reported. Another child was at school.

"It's certainly a tragedy, regardless of how it occurred," Hoover police Capt. Gregg Rector told WVTM.

Investigators said they are trying to determine how a 2-year-old could have fired the gun.
