I had an interesting experience on my 21.5" Mid-2011 iMac recently that I thought I'd share. I have Windows 7 installed on a Boot Camp partition and hadn't logged into it since mid June. I rebooted into Windows to get the latest updates, something I do every know and then.
To make a long story shorter, I spent well over an hour installing more than 50 updates and at least 5 restarts, figuring I must be finally done after the last round. I went to the Windows Updater again and ran it to see if there were any more to install. After grinding away for about 10 minutes, sure enough 22 more recommended updates and 6 optional ones showed up. After a sigh, I started the process again. The updater started and took more than 5 minutes to even begin downloading them. At this point, I simply gave up and called it a night. Nearly every update needed in the entire process were security updates.
I realize if I used the Windows partition more, updates can be downloaded in the background and installed after shutting down and such, but what a ridiculous computer platform that requires so many security updates. I know Apple takes a lot of heat for being lax on security for OS X, and rightly so, but I'd hate to use an operating system that needed security fixes so frequently.
It astounds me to this day that Windows has become the standard in the computing world. No wonder Macs have been gaining market share over Windows for quite awhile now. |
