Joe, I think there are good reasons for AOL to do well in the long run. I have an ISP, am long-time member of AOL, Prodigy, CompuServe and MSN. Of all these proprietary services AOL is best in terms of content, ease of use, etc. (my experience from daily use). AOL cannot be worse an ISP than others, their current browser is not good but can be replaced. Lots of users need technical support that smaller ISP cannot provide. Someone mentioned First Call data. Every few weeks I download the FC earning estimates from AOL. This is the type of content that AOL can provide more effectively than independent web sites. I don't want to subscribe to these individual sites and pay even $3 or 4 bucks a month. I don't need the data that often and can't manage more passwords. Paying AOL $10 monthly for access to a whole bunch of these sites is a more convenient option. And then when they have 10M or more members, more revenue can come from ad, etc.
These are just some random ideas I have. If I have to bet on a single online service provider (ISPs included), I'd bet on AOL.
