I don't disagree with anything in this article. My question is, why can't the republican party find someone with all of these qualities (including the immense wealth) and all of these intentions, who has more integrity, less personal narcissism, a longer and more rational fuse, a stronger, consistently conservative foundation, a better knowledge of foreign affairs and American and world history, war tactics, and economics, and less of a weather vane personality?
Ted Cruz has every one of the attributes granted to Trump in this article ... in addition to being a longstanding, reliable conservative, with experience and expertise in all of the above, a long history of simply standing up for what is right for America, and a record of both admirable accomplishments and deeply-held viewpoints/beliefs that are integrity-laden and worthy of trust. And the fact that Cruz is not enjoying either the publicity or the popularity of Donald Trump, simply because he is not a multi-billionaire, is all the evidence one needs to recognize that the American political system is no longer based on the selection of quality leadership, but rather on wealth, the cult of 'personality', political compromise and connections.
In order to succeed in the modern American political arena, you must be part of the system or you must be protected by the system. Donald Trump, because of his wealth, doesn't need the system. Yet not needing the system (because of one's wealth) should not be an adequate resumé when seeking the position of leader of the free world.
One of the great tragedies of modern American politics is that money and/or connections are necessary in order to get elected. But they should not be sufficient. Somewhere, over the last 240 years, the concepts of personal character, honesty, integrity, allegiance and duty got lost in the sleight-of-hand shuffle. |
