This is not at all how I expected things to play out.

Populist waves tend to shake things up. This has been building for decades. But you never know what the trigger points are until they get pulled. Never saw Trump coming. I guess he got tired of being dismissed as not a serious candidate. So he ran, just to spite the talking heads. Either he, or more likely someone else, knew enough about American history to spot the growing populism fever out there so he knew how to seize the moment.

What makes it interesting is that Trump has latched onto the crazy thread that is always embedded in a populist wave. They are generally what is left once the established parties grab off the good parts. Because populist waves alway explode in a cloud of crazy.
