Ken,

I have no experience with iPhone; my phone is an Android. I see from Googling that LastPass does have an iPhone app.

For your desktop and laptop, you will install an extension in your browser. I use Chrome, and download the extension from within Chrome. I hope other browsers support an extension download service where you can download the LastPass extension. With Chrome, at least, I found installing the LastPass extension to be painless.

Once you start using LastPass, any passwords you tell it about are sync-ed and available wherever you use LastPass. You don't have to re-enter the change on different devices. Free or Premium doesn't matter, this is just the basic mechanism.

If you have passwords already stored in a browser such as Safari or Firefox or Chrome, LastPass has an import feature to allow you to bring those passwords into your LastPass data. I don't have any direct experience with this feature.

The more I look at this the more confused I get.

I'd suggest you set aside 15 minutes to try it out. You can probably be up and running on one machine in about 5 minutes, then spend 10 minutes or so visiting sites, logging in and out, and seeing what happens. It will take more than 15 minutes to learn all of the ins and outs; but I think it's enough time for you to decide whether you want to proceed.

As far as I know, all the Premium ($12/year) version buys you is the ability to run LastPass on your smartphone. I wouldn't put down the money until you've tried the free version and decide you are happy with it. Even then, I'd be careful about using it on a smartphone. I log in on my phone only rarely, and very cautiously. The idea of losing the phone or having it stolen while logged into LastPass is frightening.
