"changing my email password would be right up there with financial sites at the top of the list" .... I would modify to say changing my email address and password.

I understand that folks have different thresholds but I suggest that only changing the email password and and not both the addie and password is penny wise and pound foolish so to speak.

The probably of cracking a password on a known email addie is a targeted attack and relatively easy.

Finding your specific email out of the universe of emails in combination with your password would be much more difficult. Although foolish (IMO) to only change the password rather than also the addie, but if you are to change only one, the most safety would be making a new email addie.

When Yahoo announced they were reading all your emails and aggregating your address into groups based on email text which they then sold to advertisers, researchers and just plain anyone who would pay .... I closed my Y email of many years and had to go through changing my email data on all the usual suspects ... so I know from experience what's involved.

Within the realm of things in my control, my simplistic approach is security is like pregnancy and there's no such thing as sorta pregnant just like there's no such thing as half safe ... only changing a few passwords or not changing your email address due to effort involved is accepting a sorta safe approach ... just make sure you are ready to pay for that baby if its arrives in nine months.

Knowingly accepting these risks and understanding the complete lost of control once identity theft occurs is a personal choice but please make sure you have considered all the ramifications before a choice is made.
