I am from SE Minnesota & live very close to where this occurred. Now I remember reading about it - but it had no mention of the Confederate Flag [which may not have been on the truck at the time].
The small town newspapers did not report about the Flags that he had used nor that it was a black neighborhood.

My wife has said that she had seen this this guys truck a few times in the Winona MN area with either a U.S. Flag or a Confederate Flag. Also that he raced loudly through the town to make noise.

So, from your article, it seems like this 'nut case' was baiting the black neighborhood in order to create tension.
That explains why he was attacked after hitting the boy.

Thanks for posting. It is enlightening to get all the facts. Why the small town newspapers in the area didn't report all the facts is telling...
