It turns out that none of the problems I thought I previously solved about waking computers actually was solved.

On the bright side, the systems that were upgraded from Windows 8.1 to 10 have shown remarkable improvements in every respect since the initial upgrade. First from updates, and now especially from the upgrade to Build 10532.
