How many reuses of a higher quality (thicker and different plastic, or perhaps non-plastic) bag has to be used to make up for the extra cost and potential environmental damage is an uncertain issue, with analysis supporting different conclusions. Its a stretch to call a differing conclusion a myth. Also how often people use the ticker bags is also rather uncertain (I have a couple, but I don't use them often, I don't carry them around with me all the time just in case I go shopping, and there is also some potential sanitary considerations depending on what you put in them).

In any case the original thin, cheap, light, and disposable (or semi-disposable, I often reuse them once or twice for other purposes, I wouldn't doubt that many other people do as well and that needs to be considered in any calculation) don't harm the environment much in the first place.
