They might also have paid 1.25, and put the difference in their pocket.

If they could do that they might as well pay out 1.2 without the leave and put the difference in your pocket.

The paid sick leave is part of what they pay to attract talent. You agree its popular right? Don't offer something people want and you have to pay them extra in order to attract them. Perhaps in some cases enough extra that you lose out in doing so. If its paid sick leave and 1.25, and the workers and potential workers want and expect paid sick leave, it might be more likely to be 1.4 and no sick leave, then 1.25, if its 1.25 with sick leave. Even though 1.4 and paid sick leave would actually cost the employer more and give the employee more.

If people where idealized perfect calculators and negotiators then the dollars in their base they give up to get pay for their sick leave would be almost exactly equal to what they gain from not having to have unpaid days when they are sick (or take a mental health day, or have sick kids)

Since they aren't. If they REALLY care about paid sick leave they are likely to give up more dollars to get the leave then they would get from not having it.
It'll certainly help the worker who calls in cuz the kids are the ones who are actually sick.
Not certainly at all. If they didn't get paid sick leave and they took those days off, then they would lose some money. Instead they lose a similar (perhaps greater) amount of money off of their base.
