We had a Republican governor until 2010

One who did little or nothing to control the costs that CA places on employers, and who after an initial effort to control CA spending and deficits caved completely on the issue. He might as well have been a Democrat (except that many of them might not have made that initial failed effort)

And one who was preceded by a Democrat, and followed by a Democrat (with the underperformed continuing under the new Democrat until fairly recently.)

Not that its really a partisan thing, Democrats and Republicans in CA have been more statist then the national average for some time, and even a non-statist governor (unlikely in most states, but less likely then normal in CA), would find it hard to reign in big intrusive government in CA.

Earlier in CA's history, when it was strongly outperforming the rest of the nation for a sustained period of time, CA's government was far less intrusive then it is today.
