Also, it kept AMAT in the US paying US taxes. There was probably a ton of political pressure for this decision (to keep AMAT in US to pay US taxes) just like there was a ton of political pressure to damage MSFT with the antitrust case so Google and Apple could grow at MSFT's expense but that was for a different reason... recalling Al Gore got board seats on both if I recall....
