News from Asia: Nidec, Tosok To Make Hard-Disk Drive Motors In Vietnam OSAKA (Nikkei)-Nidec Corp. will join hands with Tosok Corp. to produce spindle motors and fans for hard-disk drive systems in Vietnam, officials of the two companies said Saturday. Construction of the first phase of a plant will start in January in Ho Chi Minh City. Initial monthly output is set at 1.5 million motors and 1 million fans. Both figures are set to rise to 3 million a month after completion of the third phase of the 5 billion yen project in December 1999, the officials said. A company will be set up to operate the plant later this month with Tosok putting up 55% of the $12 million capitalization and Nidec 45%. Nidec, a Kyoto firm commanding a 70% share of the global market for miniature spindle motors, has a 29% stake in Tosok, a precision machinery maker based in Kanagawa Prefecture. Tosok manuactures autoparts in Vietnam. satellite.nikkei.co.jp Now while it seems not exactly like important news, it got me to thinking about continued oversupply as capacity continues to build upstream in the DD business. I would feel a little better seeing some of these kinds of plants cutting back, as opposed to doubling their production over the next couple of years.
