TOKYO, JAPAN, 1997 DEC 22 (NB). Production of DVD -Video players in Japan is expected to increase sharply in 1998, according to estimates from the Electronic Industries Association of Japan (EIAJ).

The industry group told Newsbytes it estimates total domestic production of DVD players in 1997 totaled 800,000 units, or 34.0 billion yen ($261.9 million) in value terms. For 1998, the EIAJ forecasts total production of 2,490,000 units, an increase of 211 percent on this year. By total value, the group said total production will be worth 99.6 billion yen ($767.3 million), up 193 percent on 1997.

Figures for DVD players were not included in the association's recently released forecast for the entire Japanese electronics industry because they are still not broken out in figures produced by the Ministry of International Trade and Industry.
