Remote sites, POS; systems where you want to limit the amount of moving parts. I can see NCs with no disk drives, no fans. They may not be there yet, but is on the way.
Fair enough. These are essentially those places that are now running dumb terminals. One could ask, "What's the advantage in replacing a dumb terminal with a dumb PC? (i.e., an NC)". I'm not saying there isn't a place for them; I just think they will be slowly adopted.
I continue to think the home market has potential, if a well-designed home-NC product could be done. As memory prices drop and faster network connections proliferate, you can eliminate the local disk drives (heck, you can do that now with PCs, but nobody does).
I don't know; it just seems to me with the prices of PCs what they are, the NC doesn't have that much of an advantage, and it is so easy to make the case that, "Look, for $100 more you can get a REAL computer". |
