Laugh all you want. Until Clinton, appointees were routinely approved with a few exceptions. Bork being the most notable.Bork was a bad candidate for a number of reasons. First and foremost, his role in Nixon's "Saturday Night Massacre". Two Attorney Generals resigned rather than carry out Nixon's order to fire Archibald Cox. That put Bork in that position and he complied. In some posthumously published materials, Bork claims that Nixon promised him the next seat on the Supreme Court if he carried out the order. So he could be, and was, bribed. Personal integrity apparently was not strength of his.
