Do you know why?Somewhat complicated, but in the past I have called it a "crusade" on the part of Islamic fundamentalists.

That description, of course, drew flames from the usual left-wing suspects, especially John Fowler, but despite the "nuances," I still stand by that statement.

Let me hear how you would answer that question, and I'm sure we'll find some common ground.

The ayatollahs are assholes........no question. That's understood. However, they also have some justification for hating the US for a number of reasons.

First, the US stood behind the Shah of Iran who was a fairly ruthless dictator and who was deposed in 1979. That alone would make the Iranians hate us. But even worse, Reagan supported and encouraged Saddam Hussein in his starting a war with Iran in the 1980s. The war was devastating for Iran.......at one point, they had to send 14 year old boys to fight because so many of their men had been killed. And there is a deeper significance behind the war..........more than just two nations fighting. At the time Iraq was Sunni. Iran has always been Shia. Sunnis in the ME are the majority. Sunnis treat Shia much like we treated blacks in this country. So it wasn't just a war of nations but a religious war as well. And the US stood behind Iraq. That's why Iran has so much hatred for the US.
