Larry:

G* will use a proprietary technology called multiple path diversity. Each user should be in view of 3, sometimes 4 satellites. Calls will utilize signal from any or all the sats in view. A signal from 3 sats at once will utilize all three sources to strengthen the signal. This is the beauty of CDMA. This is the ugliness of TDMA. In response to your incorrect voice delay concerns, a GEO delay is 600 milliseconds. G* is 150 to 200 milliseconds. In many cases, this will be less than the Iridium phone delay, especially when the sat-to-sat links are used. In that case, at each satellite, on board processing will have to occur. Each bird will need to decode, recode, perform echo cancellation, etc.--that takes time. Minimum life of satellite is 7 1/2 years on G* birds, longer than Iridium. Capacity is higher, and will remain that way now that TRW Odyssey is history. They would have shared CDMA spectrum, but now G* has it all to itself. Other advantages--cheaper phones as a result of multiple manufacturers competing;marketing done by local partners who share in success;simple proven technology;Bernie Schwartz;need I go on?
