This is wild. VW programmed their diesel engine computers to recognize an EPA dynamometer test, which switches the engine into a low performance mode which also reduces emissions. - latimes.com

California discovered that VW and Audi diesel cars produced since 2009 emit pollution 40 times higher than allowed when driven on the open road, even though the pollution is 40 times lower on an EPA dynamometer.

Volkswagen has admitted to this cheat which is going to cost them dearly - a retrofit of every diesel care sold in America since 2009, plus penalties up to $37,500 per diesel automobile sold which totals to $18 billion.

California testing has not discovered any similar cheat in the diesel cars sold by other makers.

The strangest bit is VW-Audi has to comply with even more stringent emissions standards in Germany and Europe where they sell far more diesel automobiles.

So they face more problems at home if they installed the same cheat program in their European models to increase performance. What a costly design choice, and I wonder if the CEO and Board knew about this.
