VW Diesel tests

I believe CA only started to require annual state emission tests for diesels in the last few years. I was not required to do any annual state diesel test when my car was licensed in CA. Maybe I did one year and it passed w/o any problem. When I moved to NV, they do not require any EPA testing on diesels (trucks and/or cars).

I am not sure what the damages might be, but I suspect an argument could/may be made that their tests conformed to the "letter of the law" (ie open to interpretation). I also wonder what configuration/software updates were made to the testing machines at these state centers. They must have had some software upgrade when they starting testing diesel engines (I doubt that software was tested for all type of diesel cars/trucks?). Those machines could be suspect too.

The diesel engine is the most efficient and cleanest (especially w/ the new Corning filters used in the large trucks) when compared to unleaded gas engines. When you look at the MPG, they still outperform equivalent gas engines.

My solution would be to integrate the new Corning filters in all the older diesel cars/trucks rather than stiff penalties. I think the testing issues are more complicated than as described in the press release and may vary on type of car and where tested. Many of the automobile computer codes can kick out no-pass smog tests if not reset properly.
