You can't let a kid walk down a block alone at night now.

We lived about 8 or 9 miles from our high school, and we hitchhiked it more than once when we missed the bus. We called home to let them know we were hitching a ride. Mom didn't drive, and dad wasn't likely to be home yet. As far as we kids ever knew, they didn't worry if we hitched.

We tended to get picked up because as Catholic kids, we wore suits and ties. But, I remember that the rides only took a few miles off the trip, as we lived out of the way - so it was a lesson.

We teens hitched all the time, and I never heard of an abduction. It was dangerous no doubt anyway, but it was a different time.
