Californian Reservoirs Fuller Than In 1977

Inevitably, water levels are extremely low in California’s reservoirs, but how do they compare with the last major drought in 1976/7?

Surprisingly, perhaps, only one, Perris Lake, actually has less currently compared to the same date in 1977, and this is only a tiny dam. Two others, Millerton and Exchequer are about the same.

The others currently hold more water, in most cases substantially more. ( New Melones did not open till after 1977.)

In total, water storage in all California reservoirs stands at 54% of average, compared to just 35% in 1977. (New Melones and the other new dams mentioned account for 571 of the current total of 12761 x 1000 Acre-Feet, so make little difference).

California’s rainfall recovered in 1978, and it remains to be seen whether the same happens this winter. However, California’s water reserves are evidently in a much better position than they were back in 1977.
