If I didn't have my home paid for, my financial situation would be worse. I think we paid it off in 2000. I tried to talk my wife into buying a custom home, but she wouldn't do it. In retrospect it would have been a disaster if she had gone along with it. I wasn't happy about retiring early, but the defense contractor I was working for was hit by government budget cuts and these things happen. * * *
