So similar characteristics doesn't mean common descent: It's more or less statistics. A lot of similar characteristics means something different from a single similar characteristic. Similar characteristics can also mean that the organism had to adapt to a similar niche in it's environment. Basketball players tend to all be tall no matter where their families come from.
