BREAKING NEWS
Pope Francis addresses United NationsLive

Pope to push action on climate, migrants at U.N.

USA TODAY 8:54 a.m.

Pope Francis will urge world leaders at the United Nations in New York on Friday to act as compassionate custodians on issues including Europe's migrant crisis, world conflict and climate change.

The speech to the 193-member U.N. General Assembly "will expand on the central themes" Francis has already discussed during his trip to the United States and Cuba so far, said Thomas Rosica, an aide in the Vatican press office. Francis' visit to the United Nations will be the fifth by a pope.

As of 8:10 AM scattered crowds of Catholic faithful and critics lined the streets along 2nd Avenue near the United Nations building, and the city's security precautions were in full display. First avenue, where the U.N. complex sits along the East River, is closed off to most pedestrians with only credentialed people allowed to pass. Security is out in force with plenty of uniformed cops and barricades at each corner.
