I'm not convinced that people from the US shouldn't be allowed to go to Canada for cheaper drugs.
I don't think it's illegal to for US citizens to buy drugs in Canada, per se. I believe it's importing those drugs back to the US (even for personal use) that's prohibited by federal law.

My understanding is that the one and only reason for this is federal law imposed by the FDA, allegedly for their concern over the safety of American citizens. Some of the FDA's propaganda on this matter can be read here:

It's also my understanding that individuals who have been importing cheaper drugs from Canada for their own use have never been prosecuted for doing so.

The FDA paints the picture that it's really using this law to go after scammers and con men selling phony drugs, and to prevent the influx of drugs they haven't approved for safety, and inferior generics whose manufacturing processes they haven't approved.

I don't agree with such broad laws. Surely the FDA can craft something more specific, and can make it so it's not illegal for someone to import a drug for their own personal use, say from a source in Canada that has been approved by Canada's health regulators.

This kinda thing generates heated debate. Those who believe individuals should have the right to ingest any compound they believe will benefit their health aren't big fans of the FDA.
