Boehner Says No Shutdown, Rips GOP's 'False Prophets'

(NEWSER) – House Speaker John Boehner said Sunday there will be no government shutdown when funding expires this week, and he unloaded on the uncompromising faction of the GOP that dogged him throughout his speakership. "The Bible says, beware of false prophets. And there are people out there spreading, you know, noise about how much can get done," Boehner said. Speaking on Face the Nation, Boehner predicted that the House and Senate will pass a bill this week to keep the government running. The move, he said, will be accompanied by the creation of a special committee to investigate Planned Parenthood and its practice of providing fetal tissue to scientific researchers. Asked whether there would be a government shutdown, Boehner replied, "No."
But he made clear a faction remains in Congress that favors unrealistic demands over policy that can be passed—even though that approach helped bring the nation to the brink of default in 2011 and triggered a government shutdown two years later. Their demands in exchange for passing a federal budget ranged from defunding ObamaCare to stripping Planned Parenthood of federal funding. "We have got groups here in town, members of the House and Senate here in town who whip people into a frenzy believing they can accomplish things that they know—they know—are never going to happen," Boehner said. "Our founders didn't want some parliamentary system where, if you won the majority, you got to do whatever you wanted. They wanted this long, slow process." |
